Hand woven using of brightly colored dried reeds, hard gourd base, and pebbles and seeds
Approximately 9.5 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide- It makes a sharp percussion sound for keeping time. Durable woven construction with looped handle. Reed permanently dyed in various bright colors, woven in patterns. A percussion instrument well known in West Africa and used by musicians. The Caxixi shaker is handwoven with sweet grass into a closed basket shape and then filled with seeds or other small particles. A dried gourd is used for the flat round bottom of the Caxixi shaker.

It creates a high pitched, clear-cutting percussive sound, great for keeping time in a percussion ensemble. It is typically played upright, using a sharp up-and-down motion so the seeds and pebbles strike the hard gourd base.
